What is Dry July?

Dry July is a unique and inspiring fundraising campaign that encourages participants to abstain from alcohol for the entire month of July. This initiative aims to raise funds for various cancer support organisations, such as The Wesley Hospital Choices Cancer Support Centre. The funds raised during Dry July play a crucial role in providing essential services, support, and care for those battling cancer and their loved ones.

Meet Sam Houlihan: A Dry July Advocate

One of the enthusiastic advocates for Dry July is Sam Houlihan, Operations Director at Pryme and a devoted individual who participated in this noble cause to raise funds for The Wesley Hospital Choices Cancer Support Centre. When asked about the impact of Dry July on his overall approach to self-care, Sam said, “I’ve signed up to Dry July to raise funds for The Wesley Hospital Choices Cancer Support Centre. Everyone has either known someone directly or close to them that has been affected by Cancer, abstaining from a drink for a month is nothing compared to what people have to go through to beat Cancer.”

Participating in Dry July has far-reaching effects beyond just raising funds. Sam shared, “Much better sleep quality which leads to a clear mind, meaning I can better effectively manage time throughout the day.” Cutting out alcohol for a month can lead to improved sleep patterns and enhanced mental clarity, which can positively impact your performance and productivity in the workplace. The positive changes don’t stop there! Embracing the Dry July challenge has the potential to influence the work environment positively. Employees who prioritise their health and well-being are more likely to be engaged, focused, and motivated.

When team members are taking care of themselves, it creates a ripple effect, inspiring others to follow suit and contributing to a healthier and more vibrant workplace culture. At the heart of every company’s policies and procedures lies the fundamental value of safety. Sam highlighted the importance of this by stating, “Worksites & Employers have a duty of care to ensure all staff remain safe; these policies and procedures are put in place to ensure a safe work environment. Most importantly, they’re put in place so employees go home at night to their families. This should be at the forefront of everyone’s mind when adopting safety policies in the workplace.”

Safety is not just a responsibility handed down by the company; it’s a personal value that everyone should prioritise. By taking care of ourselves and making choices that promote our health and well-being, we not only protect ourselves but also contribute to a safer workplace for everyone.
